IBJJF
International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation
IBJJF runs regional, national and world-level Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu championships. Events use defined belt, age and weight divisions, with separate Gi and No-Gi championships.
Who it may be good for
Competitors who want a widely recognized ruleset, belt divisions and a path toward major championship events.
Who can compete
Youth, adult and masters divisions vary by championship.
Registration
Athletes generally need an active IBJJF membership under their current belt and a registered academy and professor. Confirm the membership, affiliation and registration deadlines before making travel plans.
Weigh-ins
IBJJF competitors normally weigh in shortly before their first match. Gi competitors weigh in wearing the Gi, and No-Gi competitors weigh in wearing the required No-Gi uniform. Missing weight can result in disqualification.
Rules and scoring
IBJJF uses a points and advantages system with age, belt and division-specific restrictions. Read the current rule book and illegal-moves chart before competing.
First-event checklist
- ✓Ask your coach which belt, age and weight division to enter.
- ✓Start membership and academy approval early.
- ✓Check the uniform rules and event-specific deadlines.
- ✓Do not choose a weight class without accounting for the required uniform.
